Our fine feathered farm friends are a whole lot smarter than we are…
How many people do you think know what time the sunsets? You sort of know it happens earlier and earlier these days. But could you name the time? Could you repeat an action each night at the same time without checking your watch?
It’s 4:29 – do you know where our poultry are? Probably on their way into the evergreen trees—if they are peafowl or guinea hens—they are settling onto a comfortable branch for the evening. If they are our chickens or turkeys, they’re wandering back from the outskirts of the farm and headed back for a roost in their coops.
Not only do they repeat this ritual every night—but they do it with precision timing—As the sun officially sets, the birds are meandering to the safety of their roosts—4:29 pm tonight to be exact. By 4:45 pm, the sun has faded leaving the most glorious winter palette of orange, red and purple in the distant sky.
As I round the final corner in my RTV, having completed the evening chores of watering, graining and haying, I prepare to close up the fowl for the night. It’s the least I can to keep them safe after they went to all the trouble to come inside on time.

It amazes me how nature enables all of this to happen -- without our intervention. How is their egg production?
